American Red Cross San Joaquin County- Chapter
93fi North Commerce Street
TO: THE CITY COUNCIL t
CITY OF LODI Stockton, California 95202;
(209) 466-6971 _
FROM:. KATHLEEN KELLY, December 27, 1984
DIRECTOR, HEALTH & SAFETY `
RE: CPR SATURDAY, 1985
Dear Council Members,
Last year, the San Joaquin County Chapter of the American Red Cross participated`=
in a new event called CPR SATURDAY. This year, on January 26th, we will again
host CPR SATURDAY training. Last year, our training sites were in Manteca and =
Stockton. This year, we will again be training in Manteca and Stockton; we will
also be training in Lodi.
By offering a CPR SATURDAY site in Lodi, and by using many of the instructors who _
live in the Lodi area, we hope to acquaint the Lodi community with the instructors
in the area, and encourage more CPR classes taught on a more frequent basis all
through the year in the Lodi community.
Last year's CPR SATURDAY turned out to be the largest mass training in CPR skills
that had ever been done anywhere. The original goal of the group of Chapters
that participatedin1984 was to train 3000 people; when the event was over, we
had trained over 10,000 people!
This year, the public response and turnout promises to be even greater. We are.t
anticipating approximately 1200 people in the 3 sites we will host. In order to
provide the training, we are rounding up approximately 250 support volunteers,
70 -CPR instructors, 70 training mannequins, 3 video units, 3 computers, etc. -It.
is truly a -massive undertaking. Last year, a major financial sponsor for the pro
ject and the Sacramento Area Chapter of the American Red Cross provided the bulk _
of our supplies at no cost to us. This year, each Chapter must pay it's own way.
K
We did not wish to lose the essence of what we were doing, i.e., offering free
training, so we have proceeded to try to raise the $8000 to $10,000 necessary to A
provide the equipment and materials we will not be able to borrow or have donated
In December, we held a fundraiser that generated enough support to allow us to
purchase some new training mannequins and have enough money left to purchase the
cleaning solutions, paper, pens, etc. We still have.a need to raise. approximately
$3000. Of that amount, $1500 is necessary to purchase the T -Shirts for the CPR
instructors and other volunteers that will help identify the trainers and the aides _
from the course participants; the other $1500 is necessary to purchase the books
that will be used and, kept by the course participants. 1
Thus, we are requesting a grant of $500.00 from the City of Lodi. The $500 would ^r a
apply to either the books or the T -Shirts, per, the decision of the Council. We
E are recognizing all contributors of $500 or more as Sponsors of CPR SATURDAY.. We
hope ou will help. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
