AGENDA TITLE: Approve the City of Lodi's Arts Grants Submitted for the 2011/2012 Fiscal Year

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve the City of Lodi's arts grants submitted for the 2011/2012
Fiscal Year.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The City Council approved the grant funding for the 2011/2012
fiscal year in the amount of $36,120.00. Grant applications were
made available to local non-profit organizations with an application
deadline of September 22, 2011. Nine grants were turned in and
screened. A grant review panel from the Lodi Arts Commission (LAC) reviewed and scored them. Eight
grants are being submitted to the LAC for funding approval. Voting takes place at the regular LAC
meeting on October 12, 2011.
Eight grants are being submitted for a total of $26,500.00 for approval by the City Council. The
remaining $9,620.00 will be used for mini-grantsthroughout the balance of this fiscal year. At this time,
pending mini grants include the Sand Hill Crane Festival Art Show, First Friday Art Hops and Taco Truck
Cook Off.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funding of $36,120 provided by the General Fund.

Project Description: "Changing Faces Theatre Company would like to request a grant for its
Summer 2012 production of Treasure Island. The company will stage its eleventh summer
theatre production outdoors at Jessie's Grove Winery in Lodi, with a cast and crew of
approximately 80 students from elementary school through college."
Benefit to the Community: "Young people in Lodi have few opportunities to see or participate
in live theatre: local schools offer only very limited theatre arts programs, and several local
theatre companies have disbanded in recent years. CFTC casts all elementary school children who
audition: they are given roles in the "pre -show". Older students will audition for roles in Treasure
Island. The CFTC program is a six-week immersion in all aspects of the craft of theatre. No
student has ever been turned away because of inability to pay the cost of tuition."

Project Description: "Lodi's Young Stars of Broadway"- "The Central Valley Youth Symphony
Association will accompany 3-5 performers from the Lodi Children's Chorus to perform
Broadway musical numbers. The concert will be free to all 18 and under."
Benefit to the Community: "These planned concerts will give all members, of our community, a
chance to enjoy symphonic music. This grant proposal will also make this music free of charge to
those 18 and under. Research shows that music enhances our lives. This project gives an
opportunity to our young musicians to give to their community and to inspire other young
musicians. The goal of this project is to bring families and their children quality music and to
encourage their participation in seeking music as a continued part of their child's life."

Project Description: The "Steppin' Out" concert series provides 4f1' and 5"' grade students with
an exhilarating interactive live music education program that culminates with the opportunity to
experience a live classical music concert by a full professional symphony orchestra. The
curriculum is designed to accommodate teachers with little or no music experience. Lesson plans
will be offered in a variety of lengths to make it easier for busy teachers to find time to present the
material."
Benefit to the Community: "Since over half of the elementary school population is considered to
be socio -economically disadvantaged, the Stockton Symphony is providing a large number of
students an opportunity that they might not otherwise have. Outreach to the community is
exclusively through the school districts, private schools, and home schools. We have estimated
that over 50,000 children have been impacted by Steppin' Out concerts in the last 14 years."

Project Description: "To sponsor an event for all local artists and kids to paint scenes of Lodi
during the last week of May 2012. Cash and merchandise prizes will be awarded to winners at a
June 30 display and public judged event."
Benefit to the Community: "We plan to encourage artists of all levels and abilities to take part in
a fun event. Getting artists out in the community will draw attention to art and public art. Artists
will have their art work displayed at the LCAC Gallery at no charge."

Project Description: "The 521'"a Lodi Invitational Art Show will have a preview night benefit.
The proceeds of the benefit will be dedicated to LUSD high school art program for art materials
and supplies."
Benefit to the Community: "The general public will have an opportunity to support art programs
in our public schools by attending this event. Our event will help the short -fall to the schools
budget."

It was felt this was a duplication of the previous grant awarded for the Preview Night of the
Event.

Project Description: "The LCAC Student Gallery provides a venue for local high school artists to
exhibit their work. We provide awards for each month. We provide instruction on creating
portfolios that art students can use to prepare a presentation to compete for a scholarship to further
their education."
Benefit to the Community: `By displaying student work, we remind the public of the value of art
training. We are keeping art alive in our community and helping insure future artistic creations.
We bring the public in contact with young artists."

Project Description: "Create a Reader's Theater drama troupe for ages 10-12. They will perform
suitable plays based on folklore and children's literature. The group will perform at library story
house, nursing homes, and preschools."
Benefit to the Community: "The troupe will perform Reader's Theater, an art form, not only
entertaining but, a proven method for increasing the reading ability and confidence of students.
The program will increase the opportunities available for children to perform in Lodi."

Project Description: "Provide special storytelling programs for children at the library throughout
the year in conjunction with the 2012 Summer Reading Club. Provide a variety of formats
including ventriloquists, drama troupes, etc. The culmination of the children's Summer Reading
Club is a party coordinated with the WOW Science Museum for those children who complete the
reading requirements. This partnership is in its third year."
Benefit to the Community: "Special performances introduce children and parents to the
wonderful world of live performance. These programs broaden the attendees' experience. Many
programs offer an interactive element allowing the audience to join in the performance. These
programs offer exposure to live performances not readily available to many residents of the
community."
