COUNCIL COMMUNICATION TM AGENDA TITLE: Approve Specifications and Authorize Advertisement for Bids for 2011 GrapeLine Bus Stop Improvements MEETING DATE: October 19,2011 PREPARED BY: Public Works Director RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve specifications and authorize advertisement for bids for 2011 GrapeLine bus stop improvements. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: This project consists of constructing improvements at five bus stop locations on the GrapeLine's fixed -route bus system. Bus shelters with benches and amenities will be installed at all five locations, and new concrete will be placed at four locations to accommodate the shelter. To meet Americans with DisabilitiesAct (ADA) requirements and provide a wider pedestrian travel path, City staff has contacted two property owners to request permission to install the bus stop improvements partially on private property. In addition, one location will require a Caltrans encroachment permit. Staff expects success in receiving signed license agreements from the property owners prior to start of project construction. The proposed bus stop improvements are as follows: • Ham Lane south of Lodi Avenue —west side of street • Ham Lane south of Lodi Memorial Hospital main access — east side of street • Kettleman Lane east of Ham Lane — south side cf street • Cherokee Lane south of Lodi Avenue —west side of street • Cherokee Lane north of Hale Road — east side of street These locations were selected based on the bus drivers' observations of frequently -used stops. One bus stop location is shared with San Joaquin Regional Transit District, and they concur with the proposed improvements. The specifications are on file in the PublicWorks Department. The planned bid opening date is November 16, 2011. The approximate project completion date will be at the end of April 2012, given the deliverytime (10 to 12weeks) for the shelter equipment. FISCAL IMPACT: There will be a slight increase in the long-term maintenance costs associated with these improvements, which will be included in future Transit Operations budgets.
