Dear Di..usl z:
hank you for your recent letter outlining the work of the National
Society of Fund Raising Executives and its endeavors in recognizing the
efforts of millions of Americans who volunteer their time, 'talent"
and/or money to charitable causes.
.. I
Vh truly believe that a basic ingredient in the foundation of this
nation is the voluntary acceptance of initiative and responsibil itY by
private citizens and voluntary organizations. This fact is largely '
responsible for -the progress and development of our great country.
The City of Lodi certainly is an exemplary example of a community whose
citizens willingly give their tine and talent toward the well-being of
fellow residents and in the participation and support of on-going
community programs and projects.
- We would be most pleased to nave you in attendance at the November 1,
1989 City. Council meeting to receive a proclamation proclaiming the
Week of November 13, 1989 as "National Philanthropy Week" and to
recognize the efforts of the nonprofit volunteers in this cowunity.

The Honorable Randy Snider
Mayor of the City of Lodi

Dear Randy:
As a member of the Eoard of Directors for the Central California
Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives
(Sacramento), I rave been asked to make the following inquiry
with the City of Lodi.
Through the work of a small body of volunteer leaders from
various nonprofit organizations --united by their philantropic
spirit --National Philantrophy Day came into being three years
ago. President Reagan and the Congress endorsed the need for the
citizens of our country to recognize the efforts of millions of
Americans who volunteer their time, talent, and/or money to
charitable causes. On November 15, 1986, the f i r s t National
Philantrophy Day was celebrated in cities througkout the United
States.
The National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE) have
undertaken the respcnsibility of continuing to spearhead this
national recognition program through a variety of events. {The
Sacramento chapter hosts an annual awards luncheon to honor the
Outstanding Philantropist, outstanding Volunteer Rund-Raiser,
Outstanding Fund -Raising Executive, Outstanding Phi lantropic
Organizaton, Outstanding Corperation, and Outstanding
Foundation.) The area covered by the Sacramento chapter runs
from the Oregon border to Merced, therefore, although Lodi is
eligible for recognition by the local NSFRE organization, the
volunteers in this community do not receive the gratitude from
the citizenry that they so well deserve.
QUESTION: On behalf of NSFRE, I would like to ask if the City of
Lodi would be interested in recognizing the work of the nonprofit
volunteers in this community? Would the City consider issuing a
proclamation or some type of recognition program, luncheon,
and/or activity in conjunction with this year's event scheduled
for Friday, November 17? If such a proposal would be of
interest., I would be happy to meet with you at your convenience,
to discuss various options. (see enclosures. )
Sincerely, \

The spirit cC philanthropy is flourishing in our nation today,
from board rooms to classrooms ...from the south lawn CC
the White House to the grassroots of America. More than 89
million Americans gave cC their time, talents and resources
last yew simply because they care. A record $95.68 billion
was donated in 1987to more than 550,000 gift -supported
institutions, organizations and agencies.
Philanthropy reflects and embodies the American spirit.
That's why National Philanthropy Day, established in 1986 to
recognize all who so generously give to others, has grown to
be an important and -successful annual event.
Let us stop for a moment on Naticrnal Philanthropy Day—
November 17,1989—to say "thank you, America, for giving."
Let u s renew our commitment to helping others. And let u s
move fozward together in a spirit cC compassion, a spirit cf

RE= NATIONAL PHILANTHROPHY WEEK PROCLAMATION --PRESENTATION
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 198!'
}
This memo will provide both of you with the details that have
been made for the presentation of the National Philanthrophy Week
Proclamation that will be presented at the meeting of the Lodi
City council, WBdnesday, November 1, 1989.
1. Two recipients have been asked to accept this year's
proclamation on behalf of the City. of Lodi.
Sherri Mallory --One of the original designers
for the restoration of the old Lodi Union High
School and an active community volunteer
for Field and Fair Day since 1379. She has been
Treasurer of the restorati)n project since its'
inception.
Robert Mullen --Chairman of the Board for the Lodi
Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Alice, Sherri will prepare a short bio sheet about her work
for Mayor Snider, that will be directed to your office. Charlotte
is writing a similiar copy for you for Bob Mullen,
2. The official video (8 minutes in length) for National
Philanthropy Day (Week) has been loaned to us by the staff of the
National Society of Fund Raising Executives, Alexandria, VA. I
have seen the professional production at the Internat-.onal
Conference in Anaheim, CA, and feel that both the Council and the
community will have a far better understanding of the importance
of this event following the viewing of the video.

r
Alice, Charlotte would like to preview the video with Bob
and sherri before the Council meeting. She w i l l see to it that
you receive it a couple of days in advance so you can check out
how it will work with the new equipment at Carnegie Forum.
3. Charlotte, would you contact Sherri before the event so she
will know who is handling this presentation. She may also like
to see the video so she knows more about what we are trying to
promote within the community.
4. Charlotte, I have been in touch with maty Weybreth at the
Lodi News Sentinel €or a special feature in his editorial of
"wires and Choirs". He doesn't feel that there is enough
human/community interest in philanthropy to merit an article. If
we would have someone receiving an award at the NPD celebration
in sacrame).,;o, November 9, or Lodi had an awards program, he
would write something. I did tell him that Tom Raley, Raley's,
has been selected as the outstanding Corporation philanthropist,
but since Tom isn't from Lodi Marty feels it isn't important.
There is one person left who may assist with the possibility
of getting a feature for Raley's, and it might be more
appropriate for the "Business Section" of the paper. I have
tried to contact him several times, but he has been out. The man
is the Director of Public Relations for Raley's Corporation.
Dick Shredder
1-916-373-6574
His name was given to me by both Joan Hadley, Awards Chairman for
Sacramento's NPD, and the private secretary for Tom Raley's
daughter (Dorothy), who has taken over as the corporate President
Cor her father.
Thank you both and good luck with this project! I will be
thinking of you while OR my trip, its just that I will be one -day
ahead of things after crossing the International Dateline.
Your work is greatly appreciated!
