SUBJECT: APPROVE REVISED CLASS SPECIFICATION FOR ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR
PREPARED BY PERSONNEL DIRECTOR
RECOM ENDED ACTION: That the City Council approve the revised class
specification for Engineering Technician Supervisor.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: After the recent ccmpletion of the job analysis, the
classification specification has been revised to mare
accurately reflect the experience and education level,
duties, knowledges, and skills nec-essar_v for this
classification.

ENGINE=G TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION:
Plans, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of Engineering
Technicians. Performs highly responsible sub -professional office and
field engineering work. Works independently in one or more
engineering functions such as design, and surveying.
DISTINGUISHING C_HRIRACTFRISTICS:
fids is the supervisory sub -professional engineering class. positions
in this class are distinguished frcm the Engineering Tecruzician II
class by their supervisory responsibility and that they are expected
to work independently on complex technical tasks, The Engineering
Technician Supervisor generally possesses extensive knowledge in one
or rare specialized engineering areas.
SUPERVISION EM CISED ASND RECEIVED:
Receives direction fror-n the Chief Civil Engineer.
Exercises direct supervision over Engineering 'rechmicians and others
as assigned.
MCAMPLE:S OF DUTIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Craws maps, construction plans, exhibits and other Engineering
drawings with the use of a microcomputer and ccinputer aided drafting
system.
Plans, monitors, evaluates work aiNd trains subordinate technicians.
Assists in the administration and develoFmet:t of the assigned section
budget .
Does a variety of Engi.neerinq calculations with the aid of a
prog1rarwred calculator.
Purchases necessary supplies and materials.
Responsible for maintaining and updating accurate records, field notes
and progress -:coons.
Determines and lays out controls for aerial photogramnetzy.
Inspects minor Public Works constructidn projects.
DESIGN AM DRAFTING
Calculates material quantities, survey information and other
Engineering problems with the use of a programmable calculator.
Drafts a variety of Engineering drawings manually including tracing,
i -'king and layouts.
SURVEY" PA=
Supervises assistants, coordinates scheduling with contractors and
property owners, and records accurate survey data.
Performs topographic surveying, using electronic equipment, setting
lines, grades and taking measurements.

Principles of Pasic math, Algebra, geouetry, trigone retry .
Ccanputerized drafting techniques and record-keeping systems.

Contemporary engineering survey practices and equipment.
Microcc uter operations.
Construction wi and standards.
Principles of supervision.
Basic budget practices.

Exercise independent judgement.
Commnicate effectively wit!! contractors and the general pYb1ic.
Interpret engineering maps, plans, construction standards and legal
descriptions.
Ability to:
Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
EXPEPJEN(M AND EDUCATION
Any ccmbination equivalent to experience and education that w-culd
likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be

Three years subprofessional Engineering work in survey and/or
drafting/design activities, which includes some experience in a leads
worker capacity.
College level courses in C i v i 1 Engineering, hydraulics, statistics,
surveying or graphics can be substituted. on a year fur year basis for,;
up to two years of experience.
