AGENDA TI'! E: Approve Right -of -Way Acquisition and Street Widening,
228 and 232 South Hutchins Street
RECOMMEN ED ACTION: That the City Council approve the acquisition of the
ultimate right-of-way at 228 and 232 South Hutchins Street and authorize the
related widening.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Public Works Department is in the process of
correcting public sidewalks with offsets of 4" to 6". The property at
232 South Hutchins Street has two street trees that have created several
hazardous areas that fall in this range. Correction of the sidewalk will
require removal of the two trees and the adjacent curb andgutter. At the
north property line of Jack - in -the -Box, the street narrows from a half width
of two lanes (32' in a 40' right-of-way) to one lane (20' in a 30'
right-of-way). Additional width is needed to provide a reasonable merging
area north of the major intersection at Lodi Avenue. The ultimate
right-of-way was acquired north of the two homes at the time the apartments
were built last year. Setback lines, 40' each side or' the center line, were
established in November 1962 and reaffirmed by the City Council in March of
1982.
It � s the Public Works Department's recommendation that the City Council
authorize the acquisition of the necessary right-of-way from the two
remaining parcels in the block, and the widening of Hutchins Street adjacent
to the two homes to provide a safe, orderly flow of traffic. The estimated
cost of acquisition, including appraisals, is $15,000.
