Activity Guide
Welcome...
26TH EDITION
Dear parks, Recreation and
Cultuml Services Patrons
You hold in your hands a gateway to a world of life -enriching activities, from sports to music
to classes that will engage you or your child. This could be a stepping stone to a new career or
hobby, an opportunity to make new friends or simply acquire a skill that makes your life more
fulfilling.
Whatever it is, whatever your age, we're hoping you give the Activity Guide a close look. Our
department works hard to assemble programs to meet the community's interests, and we're
fortunate we're able to introduce you to so many high-quality instructors.
In addition, the guide has a calendar of events and schedules of City activities available to
anyone without having to register.
So grab a seat and take a moment to lookthrough these pages. Perhaps you'll find a class that
will make you a better job candidate, make you feel more energized, ora sport that you or your
child can share for years to come. Invest in yourself!
It's exciting to be part of a department with a long history of offering a wide variety of activities
and program to the community. We're certain you'll find something that will excite you as well!
Sincerely,
Jeff Hood

SQUARE DANCING AND ROUND DANCING
Square dancing is four couples forming a square and dancing as a group. It is a physical
activity, good for the mind, body and soul. It is smoke and alcohol free for a healthy
environment. The calls coordinate the body and brain -physical fitness burns calories -
slows and helps prevent loss of bone mass -and the social aspects of interacting in a
square encourages many friendships.
Joe Vallety has over40 year experience directing dance patterns for square dancing. He also
has the experience for cueing round dancing, which is a ballroom type dance as everyone
dances the same steps to the cues given to the rhythm of the music.
Recommended for ages 10 years and up. Partners not required.

WRITING TO HEAL
Trauma is a certainty of life; healing isn't. However, there are a number of ways a person
suffering from pain or loss can regain control and develop a purposeful, passionate life
again. There is a great deal of evidence that writing can hasten the healing process.
This course offers guidance in implementing a writing program for the express purpose of
rediscovering hope, health, and joy. Whether the loss is one of illness, divorce, death of a
loved one, or anothertraumatic experience, the techniquestaught here will help you to move
beyond judgment, and learn to live fully each day. The class is open to caregivers as well
as those suffering trauma. (note: the instructor, Linda Abbott Trapp, PhD, is a former Dean
of the California School of Professional Psychology, and has had a counseling practice in
several states and abroad. A supply fee of $10 is payable to the instructor the first day

PIANO WITH VICTORIA
My non-traditional approach is especially appealing to people who relate to one or more of
the following:
• I have just a little or no piano experience.
. 'struggled previously with traditional lessons.
• !want toplay just for myself oratcasual parties, sing-alongs, church.
• I quit lessons because it was too hard/frustrating/couldn't play handstogether/wasn't
allowed to play music of my own choosing...
• I read music well, but 'can't play a note without a written page in front of me
. I want to play with and without sheet music, and/or "lead sheets".
Play first - read notes a little later, after you are able to get around on the keys, playing
music that sounds good. You'II discover what makes music "tick" by experiencing it. It's not
mysterious! You will be guided through a wonderful musical journey where your hands will
play your heart through Pop, Blues, Gospel, Classical, Accompaniments, Composition and
Improvisation your first semester.
Foundation material kits including CD and DVD are $55 once per semester. Accessory
kits, less than the Foundation kits, vary in price and are usually not introduced in the first
semester. Payment for the kits are directly to the instructor. You will be contacted by me as
soon as you are enrolled. A 10% discount is offered if making a full payment for the entire
semester. Otherwise, class may be paid in monthly installments.

IMPROV COMEDY
Fun, inspiring, freeing and hilarious; if these words sound interesting, then this workshop
is for YOU! Improv Comedy, made famous from "Whose Line Is It Anyway...", is one of the
fastest growing skills to have in the entertainment business. Notto be confused with Stand-
up comedy, Improv is where you make everything up as you go. The skills from this workshop
help you think on your feet and adapt to any change in a situation. And it's not only for
actors, but also for anyone who is interested in becoming more outgoing, more comfortable
in social situations or getting more self-esteem. Anybody can do this! Brent Tubbs, who
performs with such groups as ComedySportz, The Second City LA, and The Reduced
Shakespeare Company, has worked and performed with some of the best improvisers in Los
Angeles and is thrilled to bring this art form to Lodi. Through this workshop, you will learn
the basics of improv and learn what it takes to perform in an improv show. You'II laugh,
you'll cry (from laughing) and you will have the time of your life. COME JOIN THE FUN!

YOU'RE ON THE AIR (HOW TO REALLY MAKE IT IN VOICE-OVERS!)
VOICE-OVERS are hot today! You don't have to be an actor to get voice-over work, but it
certainly doesn't hurt! With such notable talent as Morgan Freeman, Glenn Close, and
Alec Baldwin lending their voices to commercials, films, and videos, one would think that it
would be next to impossibleto break into this field. Not so! You'll learn about an exciting,
new way to get around the competition and actually turn voice-overs into a thriving full
or part-time business! Lisa Foster will discuss the voice-over business as a whole, the
numerous opportunities, the incredible income potential, and will discuss the all important
"demo" and how to have it produced. You'II step up to the mic and do some practice
recording, and best of all, you'll hear the results!

DECORATIVE PAINTING
Have you ever thought that Decorative Painting suggested painting simple flowers on a
wooden or tin plate? Yes, it can be that and so much more. Modern Decorative Painting
encompasses painting any subject on virtually any surface. You can create a portrait of the
family pet on canvas, a fall or winter wall hanging, colorful leaves on fabric, a still life of fruit
on a wooden plate, or landscapes on any material or surface. This is in addition to creating
one of a kind wearable art on T-shirts, jeans or jackets. With the use of acrylic paints and
simple step by step painting procedures, almost any decorative art project can be achieved.
Use your own drawings or patterns supplied by the instructor. You pick the subject.
Stop by during class hours on Monday and Thursday to observe the class in process.

NATURE PROGRAMS IN OUR COMMUNITY
Lodi Lake Nature Area Docents- Volunteering at its Best!
If you love nature and children, and can walk a mile or two without problems, then consider
joining the Lodi Lake Nature Area Docents, a group of volunteer naturalists.
This volunteer group has been serving Lodi since 1986. You don't need to know much about
science, just have some time to donate and a willingness to learn about the area.
Our mission: To stimulate people of all ages to learn about and appreciate the 58 -acre Lodi
Lake Nature Area because of its unique riparian woodland ecosystem, which borders the
Lower Mokelumne River at Lodi Lake Park.
Or goal: Our goal is two -fold:
•We strive to educate "young -at -heart docents" through monthly meetings that
equip and stimulate volunteers to lead tours
•We strive to reach our community's students of all ages through nature tours of the Lodi
Lake Nature Area.
Through engaging interpretive techniques, docents encourage students "to see, to
understand, to love and protect" our local "island of plant and animal diversity" found
at Lodi Lake Nature Area, a remnant of the rapidly vanishing riparian forests of the San
Joaquin Valley.
What Does it Take? Please contact us for an interview if you are interested. Once you have
been interviewed and accepted, you must pass a fingerprint and background check. A self -
study natural history of the Mokelumne River and Lodi Lake binder prepares you with needed
information. Pass a take-home test and you are ready! As a new docent, you will typically
accompany some tours being led by more experienced docents till you are ready to lead your
own. Qualified docents must then be willing to lead at least two tours monthly during the
school year.
Docent meetings occur on the second Thursday of every month and take place at the Lodi
Police Department's Community Room. Monthly programs focus on topics related to nature
and the river area and help provide ongoing education. College students seeking community
service may also be interested in applying.
Contact: kgrantQlodi.gov for more information or call 209.327.2063

Lodi Lake Nature Area Docent Trail Tour
This visit to the Lodi Lake Nature Area brings to life those life -science concepts introduced
in the classroom. Volunteer naturalist docents will lead the students in the discovery and
appreciation of the wonders of the riparian habitat. Trail is 1% miles, flat and suitable for
wheelchairs. Tour takes approximately 1°/0 hours. One-month advance reservations required.
Discovery Center - Natural History Museum
Following a short lunch, follow the trail tour with a visit to the Lodi Lake Discovery Center,
where students can learn from the mounted collection of animal specimens, usually found
along the river. Depending on grade level and class interest, the room can be interpreted
to suit teacher needs.
Watershed Ed
Docent presentation additionally can focus on appropriate watershed issues that relate to
students' responsibility at home/school where urban/rural stormwater runoff is discharged

California Inland Coastal Cleanup
Lodi Lake Park and Mokelumne River
Next cleanup: 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, September 15,2012.
Since 1985, a worldwide volunteer cleanup event occurs on the third Saturday of each
September. Since 2003, the City of Lodi has hosted a California Coastal (Inland) Cleanup
at Lodi Lake Park and on the Mokelumne River, within city boundaries. This annual park
and river cleanup is an attempt to involve citizens in keeping their rivers and oceans free
of inland trash.
In Lodi, much of the rain that falls on or flows to streets is discharged to the Mokelumne
River. On the work day, volunteers are divided into teams that then pick up trash at Lodi
Lake Park and along the Mokelumne River. Trash is then sorted, counted, documented and
the data is sent to the California Coastal Commission. Students needing community service
hours are encouraged to attend. Certificates are given to all participants.
Interested? For more details (209) 327-2063.
Clean -A -Park
Community Service Groups! Opportunities abound for civic minded service groups, school
groups, scouts and families to lend a hand and spend a day helping keep our Lodi Parks
clean. Bags, borrowed gloves, tarps and grapplers provided.
Interested? Call the Parks office for more information: (209) 333-6800, ext. 2454.
Clean -A -Curb
Protect our local waterways! Did you know that school playground litter can end up in our
waterways?
Many of the City of Lodi's parks also act as stormwater basins to hold street runoff before
it is discharged into other waterways. This stormwater is not treated! Take action on your
school's campus by organizing a "Clean -A -Curb" for students to participate in after school.
As a practical way for students to celebrate Earth Day, earn community service hours, or
for environmental clubs or After -School Programs to host a school wide community service
project, contact the Public Works Department to learn how environmental stewardship can
be taught through action. Stormwater education programs are also available for school or
club presentations.
Interested? Call 327-2063 for more information. Gloves, bags, tarps, and grapplers are
provided for borrowing.
