Rodems (COM) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve the City of Lodi's Division of Arts & Culture grants submitted for the 2010/2011 Fiscal Year. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The City Council approved the grant funding for the 2010/2011 fiscal year in the amount of $42,500. Grant applications were made available to local non-profit organizations with an application deadline of August 27, 2010. Eleven grants were turned in and screened, a five -member panel from the Lodi Arts Commission (LAC) reviewed and scored them. Remaining members of the LAC were sent grant summaries to review. Nine grants were submitted to the LAC for funding approval. Voting for approval took place at the regular LAC meeting on September 8,2010. Grants totaling $35,500 were approved at that meeting. The remaining $7,000 will be used for mini -grants throughout the balance of this fiscal year. FISCAL IMPACT: Similar to last year, funding of $42,500 provided by the General Fund. The company will stage the play outdoors at Jessie's Grove Winery in Lodi, with a cast and crew of approximately 80 students." Benefit to the Community: "A number of CFTC alumni are now pursuing careers in professional theater.. The majority of our company members pursue other paths, but for them too, the CFTC programs offers valuable benefits.. ...CFTC has taught life skills- - teamwork, commitment, responsibility, problem -solving — in a setting that is simultaneously enjoyable and rigorous.... The quality of our productions was recognized in the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance's 2008 Elly Award nominations.. ..In choosing Romeo and Juliet, we hope to give our community the chance to know Shakespeare as a mesmerizing storyteller." This will include featuring a "rising star" chosen from the Lodi Children's Chorus to perform with the Central Valley Youth Symphony at our 45th Anniversary Gala Concert and to perform at our dress rehearsal as a free concert to the community on the same day. These two concerts will be held at Hutchins Street Square on Saturday, February 5,201 1." Benefit to the Community: "These planned concerts will give all members of our community a chance to enjoy symphonic music. This grant proposal will also make this music free of charge. Research shows that music enhances of lives. This project gives an opportunity to our young musicians to give to their community and to inspire other young musicians." Art Form(s): Music Grant Request: $5,000.00 Project Expenses: $43,029.00 Previous Funding: 2001-02 - $9,542.00; 2003-04 - $4,006.00; 2004-05 - $7,000.00; 2005-06 - $1,000.00; 2008-09 - $2,500.00; 2009 — 10 - $2,500.00 Recommended for funding 2010-11: YES Award: $5,000.00 Project Description: "The Steppin' Out concert series provides 4 I and 5t" grade students with an exhilarating interactive live music education program that culminates with the opportunity to experience a live classical music concert by a full professional symphony orchestra. Last year's concert featured as soloist, Steven Kim, a fourteen -year-old California violinist." Benefit to the Community: "Champions of Change researchers have shown that students with a high level of arts participation outperform "arts poor" students by virtually every measure and that the integration of the arts into a curriculum can help level the playing field for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.. ...the arts help develop skills such as perception of relationships, finding multiple solutions to problems, attention to nuances, decision making, and visualization of goals and outcomes. These are the kind of skills needed in the workplaces of the future. We have estimated that over 50,000 children have been impacted by Steppin' Out concerts in the last 14 years." This musical will cast youth, adults and musicians from the Lodi community. Benefit to the Community: "When we began Troupe Cabana Productions 18 years ago, our goal was to give children and youth a positive experience of excellence in the performance arts. As artists and performers ourselves, it has been disappointing to see the deterioration of theater, music and dance curriculum in the schools and communities. The availability of an enriching and challenging musical opportunity for families is rare today. Troupe Cabana Productions has since retired but with the formation of Lodi Musical Theatre, our objective remains the same. We will continue to look for ways to offer high quality performing arts experiences to the members of our community, both in the classroom and on the stage." We wish to educate and promote the Native American culture and preserve community relations. These events are open to the public and are for all Nations and generate city revenue." Benefit to the Community: "Our target audience is Native American children and their cultural education and participation. Our events are open to the public to attend to both enjoy and become involved with their children and another culture." Group Name: The Arts at St. John's Art Form(s): Music Grant Request: $5,000.00 Project Expenses: $10,188.00 Previous Funding: 2007-08 - $1,500.00;2008-09 - $2,000.00; 2009-10 $2,125.00 Recommended for funding 2010-11: NO Award: 0.00 Project Description: "This project is planned for October 15, 2010. Anonymous 4 will bean excellent addition to our concert series giving The Arts at St. John's the quality and variety we require. Our objective is to sell 350 tickets and fill the reception area with guests from the central valley to the bay area. The local community has been supportive of our concerts and we have received positive feedback from our concert goers, our goal is to bring the best we can to Lodi." Benefit to Community: "Bringing local and out of town audiences to the area to experience top entertainment for all ages. Our out-of-town guests are always thrilled to discover Lodi and the downtown area." Group Name: Lodi Community Art Center Art Form(s): Visual Art Project 1 Title: Mommy and Me Grant Request: $9,000.00 Project Expenses: $6,830.00 Previous Funding: 2009-10 - $2,150.00 Recommended for Funding for 2010 - 11: YES Award: $1,000.00 Project Description: "To provide low cost art experiences for children aged 2 — 7 years in the company of a caregiver on a weekly basis. We do this to fulfill the mission of the Lodi Community Art Center to bring art awareness & education to the community by offering classes for young children. The instructor will be Patti Wallace, with guest instructors: Sara Mellow; Suzanne Rawlins & other Lodi Art Center members as needed." Benefit to the Community: "The more channels of communication are opened & positive art experiences are provided, the more positive the growth & development of the children & their interpersonal relationships with family, peers & community. Art offers opportunities for self- expression, growth & increased self esteem for all involved. These are building blocks for cultural understanding & stronger community & family life." Project 2 Title: Lodi Community Art Center — Student Gallery/Scholarship Art Form: Visual Art Grant Request: $3,500.00 Project Expenses: $3,870.00 Previous Funding: 2005-06 - $2,080.00; 2006-07 - $2,273.00; 2007-08 - $4,650.00; 2009-10 - $3,400.00 Recommended for Funding for 2010 - 11: YES Award: $2,000.00 Project Description: "The Student Gallery Project is designed to provide a venue for local high school students the opportunity to exhibit their artistic talent in the community. Community art teachers mentor students on portfolio assemblage, presentation and biography preparation in a workshop environment. Students are rewarded with ribbons, monetary awards and scholarships." Benefit to the Community: "The Student Gallery/Scholarship project provides opportunities and resources that foster outlets for creative expression and promotes reflection and self- expression for aspiring high school students interested in the arts. Each month, LCAC puts the spotlight on the students and their artistic talent through a monthly exhibit. The students' creativity, talent and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments or experiences can be shared with others. Families, friends and the community appreciate and enjoy the students' artistic talent. Art teaches one's soul to see." Project 3 Title: Lodi Community Art Center — Open Studio Tour Art Form: Visual Art Grant Request: $2,000.00 Project Expenses: $7,700.00 Previous Funding: 2009- 10 $4,250.00 Art Form(s): Visual Fine Arts Recommended for Funding for 2010-11: YES Award: $2,000.00 Project Description: "There are 20 artists participating in the 2 -day tour at 10different studio locations. The public is invited to visit artists in their studios or workshops, see them at work and ask them questions. Finished work is displayed and is for sale to the public." Benefit to the Community: "Participating local artists benefit from the exposure of their art and talents. Most sell some of the work they display. Visitors benefit from entering the studios and work stations of artists and see them at work. There are opportunities for discussions of all types about the process of creating different types of art. Sponsors benefit from having their names prominently displayed in the printed materials used for the tour." Group Name: Lodi Sandhill Crane Association Art Form: Visual Art Grant Request: $2,000.00 Project Expenses: $3,460.00 Previous Funding: 2001-02 - $2,000.00; 2004-05 - $3,000.00; 2005-06 - $2,320.00; 2006-07 - $1,505.00 (Mini -Grant); 2007-08 - $1,000.00 (Mini -Grant); 2009-10 - $1,700.00 Recommended for Funding for 2010 - 11: NO Award: $0.00 Project Description: "The Lodi Sandhill Crane Association is requesting a Lodi Arts grant to provide support for the 2010 Sandhill Crane Festival Art Show. Patricia Theobald Payne, a printmaker, will be our featured artists. The Art Show will display approximately 80 pieces, including fine art in a variety of media and photographs." Benefit to the Community: "It's difficult to separate the art show from the rest of the Crane Festival in regards to the benefit of the community. The art show provides members of the community an opportunity to view artwork from many well known and talented artists at no charge. The Art show is also an opportunity for the community members to learn about and appreciate the cranes, local wildlife, and art." Group Name: Hispanic Business Committee, Lodi Chamber of Commerce Art Form: Cinco de Mayo Event Grant Request: $2,000.00 Project Expenses: $4,350.00 Previous Funding: None Recommended for Funding for 2010 —11: YES Award: $500800 Project Description: "The Cinco de Mayo celebration is entering its 5th year and will take place for its second year at the May Street Fair on Walnut Street in downtown Lodi. ......is a fundraising event for scholarships for local Hispanic high school seniors. This event includes entertainment, music, talent shows, kids' activities, art exhibits and food." Benefit to the Community: "Participants will benefit from gaining exposure for their business or organization. The entire Lodi community will benefit from our event by experiencing and being a part of a multi -culture event. Nevertheless the individuals that will benefit the most will be the high school seniors that will be receiving the scholarships to continue their education."
