BACKNOW INFORMATION: The Parks and Recreation Conrission has:' -'adopted a policy for, recceriding to the City Council the naming or renaming of parks, rpCMp_atinn facilities and parks features. A copy of that policy is attached (Exhibit A). In accordance with that policy, the Conaission is recommending that two City parks and recreation facilities be named by the City Council as noted above. The Parks and Recreation Commission has for some time been very interested in taking action to honor these two individuals who served the City for so marry years. To establish a uniform policy and procedure regarding the naming of parks, recreation facilities, and parks features. B To facilitate the prompt naming of such facilities so they will be readily identified and w i I I reflect on the history and geography of our local community. C. To encourage public participation i n the naming of such facilities, and as weR the dedication of land or funds by individuals or groups for public use who wish to perpetuate a name of their choice. 1# A. Neighborhood parks adjacent to public schools shall be named similarly. B Neighborhood parks not adjacent to schools, major parks, recreation facilities, and special features within parks such as playgrounds, picnic areas, sports fields, structures, groves of trees, etc. rrai be named for the following: 1. Geographic features, such as adjacent streets, neighborhoods, plants or trees, lakes or rivers, etc. 2. Events or persons of historical significance. 3. Individuals or organizations of local significance bearing a relationship to the City of Lodi or its parks and recreation system. Generally this relationship is noted by outstanding and unusual contributions to the community in terms of leadership, involvement, or substantial and significant donations of land and/or funds. PROCEDURE A. The City Manager shall direct the Parks and Recreation Director.1o,solicit potential: names.. for a new City park, recreation favility", or park feature or to rename Bach: B. The Parks and Recreation Director shall relay this .request."to"the Parks: and Recreation Comission and jointly determine;: .the appropriate means` of soliciting public input in naming the facility. Such may include advertising in a local newspaper, inviting citizens to participate in a naming contest, or convening an ad hoc committee composed : of representatives of various sectors of the�commvnity. - C The Parks and Recreation Director shall receive these Mrittea suggestions and refer a roaster I i s t of proposed names to the Parks and Recreation Commission following the deadline for submissions. D The Parks and Recreation Commission shall review the proposed names and the recommendation of the Parks and Re:reation Director. The Parks and Recreation Commission shall then recomend the name deemed most appropriate and forward this recommendation to the City Council for final consideration, along with a listing of all suggestions submitted. Reese. Both of these gentlemen served Lodi well for over.40 years. Ed, of course, was our Parks and Recreation Director and David served as a Commissioner on the Parks and Recreation Commission and dealt with the many facets of the Parks and Recreation Department, its facilities, programs and policies the Commission had input in. Your review and action on this matter would be greatly appreciated by all.
