On motion of Council Member Olson, Hinchman second, the matter was referred to the Parks and Recreation Commission. -r June 18, 1990 Dear CouncilMembers, Enclosed is a petition signed by myself and other concerned parents about the current addition of a B.3.Q. and picnic area at Emerson Park. We appreciate the monies being put into improving the park by the Lions Club, and the efforts of the harks and Rees Commision, however we do not, feel, that a charity donating money is cause to not question if safety is being comprimesed. We also do not feel that it is too 1&te to make our concerns heard, knowing full well the challenge of bureaucratic red tape, because it is the saftey of our children that is at stake. I have continually been told, that the improvements to the park, are because this is what the people wanted. I question then, who are we? I have been informed that some of the people who requested a B.B.Q. area are involved with little league and other baseball orginizations, and while I respect their wishes I do not feel that the only corner of the park that is designated for the children should be where the B B.Q.s are located. If the ball players want B.B.Q.s then put it by the ball field, and leave our children's play area a safe place to play. I had originally taken my concerns to '-he Parks and Recs commision, in particular Mr. Ron Wiliimson the Parks Director and Mr. Steve Scott, Chairman of Parks and Recs. Both these men tried to appeas me by agreeing to having the B.B.Q. located by the Tiny 'Tots play area removed, and for listening and trying to help I an: appreciatIve, however I do not feel that this is enough. I was informed that the project would continue as planned arid, if they actually did see a problem down the road, that perhaps something could be done. I t saddens me that the safety of our children has to be .jeopardized ,.o prove a point. Do they actually have to have a child seriously hurt to change their plans:' Wi 11 it ti -Ake something this frightening to get them to at least mee', with us to hear our suggest ions? Thant; roti very much fc,r hearing our concerns :arid we appreciate ani• help you could offer us on this inatter.
