CITY OF LODI
COUNCIL COMMUNICATION

AGENDA TITLE: Adopt Resolution Accepting Cable Rejuvenationfor English Oak Subdivision,
Phase One Under Contract with UtilX, Inc.
MEETING DATE: April 20, 2011
PREPARED BY: Electric Utility Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adopt a resolution accepting cable rejuvenationfor English Oak
Subdivision Phase One under contract with UtilX, Inc.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The cable rejuvenation project was awarded to UtilX, Inc., of Kent,
Washington on July 7, 2010, in the amount $95,226.40. The contract
has been completed in substantial conformance with plans and
specifications approved by the City Council on April 7, 2010.
The project provided rejuvenation of 6,487 feet of direct buried underground cables and 85 elbows with
silicon insulation fluid in the English Oak Subdivision Phase One. Rejuvenation of direct buried
underground cable is 30 to 40 percent of the cost to replace underground cables as it does not incur
expenses for digging, conduit laying and back -fill. It also minimizes the outage time during the project
implementation period.
The final contract price was $49,176.10. The difference between the contract amount and the final
contract price was due to change orders reducing the original contract by $46,050.30. These change
orders were a result of cables that could not be rejuvenated due to their neutral being corroded below
minimum acceptable levels. They will be replaced by EUD staff.
Following acceptance by the City Council, a Notice of Completion will be filed with the County Recorder's
Office.
FISCAL IMPACT: Minimizesfrequency of outages and increases reliability of the underground cables
in the subdivision, and ultimately the entire electrical distribution system.
FUNDING: Included in the FY 2010/11 EUD BudgetAccount No. 161651.
