February 12, 1990
Lodi City Council

Lodi, California 95240
Dear Council Member:
The Lodi Lake Nature Area Docent Council is composed of
people concerned for and committed to the preservation
of the unique and delicate riparian area that lines the
Mokelumne River. We conduct tours through the Nature
Area adjacent to the east side of Lodi Lake. We take
great pleasure in sharing our appreciation for the area
with groups of all ages. This is done on a volunteer
basis,
The Docent Council nembers have asked me to speak for
them and express our strong support for the work and
hopes of the Mokelumne River Conservation Alliance. As
you know, the Alliance is striving for the maintenance
of the natural stature of the riparian wetlands on the
north bank of the Mokelumne River, especially the
stretch of the river from Highway 99 to the town of
Woodbridge.
It is our hope that you will seriously consider the
Alliance's presentztions and support their proposals to
preserve the natural atscsphere of this very special
tract of terrain.
Th nk you for your at -tent -ion to this matter.

TO: Mokelumne River Conservation Alliance
FROM: A North Shore Property Owner
It appears as though someone must take the initiative to
slow down what appears to be an organized group of "do gooders"
who know best what should be done with other people's property.
For the benefit of the Mokelumne River Conservation Alliance
there are virtually NO undeveloped wetland areas along the
Mokelumne River, and particularly in the area of your concern,
between Highway 99 and Woodbridge. This entire riverbottom might
best be referred to not as "relatively undisturbed open space"
but rather as a totally modified environmental area which, inci-
dentally, is privetely owned with the exception of the storage area
of the Woodbridge Irrigation District.
It is no accident that it is, indeed, an area of "unique
environmental and scenic resources" as you describe it. The north
shore property owners (and the W.I.D.) have spent a great deal of
time and money to develop these lands, which has included retaining
the riparian trees and habitat as can be viewed by boaters, and
from Lodi's south shore.
For your information, these areas you refer to as scenic wet-
lands are actually now usable lands which include lakes, recreational
areas and various farms which replace the inaccessible, mosquito -
infested jungles of past years.
This development of the north shore riverbottom areas has
occurred during the past thirty years, and the owners of these
lands do not need, nor want, the assistance of those who do not
value the Fifth Amendment.
