AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of Proclamation Commending the Citizens of this
Community and Endorsing the Public/Private Partnership Between Lodi
Unified School District and California Waste Removal Systems on Their
Community -Wide Recycling Efforts

RECOMMENDED ACTION: That Mayor Hinchman present a proclamation commending the
citizens of this community and endorsing the public/private
partnership between Lodi Unified School District and California
Waste Removal Systems on their community -wide recycling efforts.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The citizens of Lodi, through their joint recycling efforts
with California Waste Removal Systems, have reduced the
amount of solid waste going to the landfill, thereby
addressing the mandates of AB 939.
The citizens of Lodi, through the "People Who Care . Recycle" Program, have
recycled over 4,570,111 pounds of newspaper, aluminum, glass and plastic which saved
precious natural resources in addition to providing a solution to our landfill
crisis.
California Waste Removal Systems/" People Who Care . Recycle" together with Lodi
Unified School District Elementary Science Partnership have created and implemented
an educational recycling program that teaches Lodi's school children to think before
they throw away. It introduces students to the value of preserving our environment
through recycling. This program incorporates the use of assemblies, "hands-on"
science lessons, as well as provides school -site and curbside recycling.
The "People Who Care . . . Recycle" educational program benefits the schools by
providing funds totaling over $69,000 since its inception. These proceeds are used
for field trips, technical equipment, science equipment, literature books, physical
education equipment and other classroom needs.
