AGENDA TITLE: Adopt Resolution Authorizing Purchase of Mural Depicting Historic Japantown to
be Located at the Buddhist Church Annex Building at 23 North Stockton Street

RECOMMENDED AC`314N: Adept a resolution authorizing the purchase of a mural depicting Historic
Japantown to be located at the Buddhist Church Annex Building at 23 North
Stockton Street.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In 2007, the Arts Advisory Board recommended the City Council
appropriate $75,000 from the Art In Public Placesfund for two
murals by Lodi artist Tony Segale. On July 2, 2008, the City Council
appropriated $46,000 from the fund for the first of the two planned
murals.
Mr. Segale is presenting his design for the second mural for the City Council's approval. The first of these
murals, depicting old Sacramento Street at 209 South Sacramento Street, was completed last month.
The cost of that mural was $46,000. The design for the second, of Historic Japantown, was approved by
the Buddhist Church community and then by the Art Advisory Board. The anticipated cost of this mural is
$29,000, the balance of the $75,000 recommend by the Board.
FISCAL IMPACT $29,000 from the Art in Public Places program.

" Historic Japantown Mural", an addition to the Head West Walldog Project
Budget is for the above titled mural includes paint coating of 12'x 94'8" of block wall of the Buddhist
Church Annex Building, located at the corner of Stockton and Elm St. The walls locations are: the 54'8"
north face on Elm St. between Stockton and Main Sts., and the 40'east face in the alley. The mural areas
will be approximately 8' x 84', and depict historic Lodi /Japanese images on rice paper, set inside a
painted framed area. The art will be rendered directly on the surface of the building with premium quality
exterior late paints preceded by primer and pressure wash prep.
The Historic Japantown Mural will be located at and into the northern edge of one of the few remaining
Japantown is California. This historic area is bordered by Elm St. on the north and Oak St. to the south,
with Main and Stockton to the east and west.
Design, research, and painting of mural, including all paints and materials $35,500.00
`2009 Stimulus package' discount - $6,500.00
Total cost $29,000.00
50 % deposit begins all work.

A RESOLUTION OF THE LODI CITY COUNCIL APPROVING
PURCHASE OF ART IN PUBLIC PLACES MURALTO BE
LOCATED AT THE BUDDHIST CHURCH ANNEX BUILDING
SITE AT 23 NORTH STOCKTON STREET
WHEREAS, on March 28, 2007, the Art Advisory Board approved funding in the
amount of $75,000 for two murals by local artist Tony Segale; and
WHEREAS, the artist has now presented his artwork for the second mural, which
will be located at the Buddhist Church Annex Building, located at 23 North Stockton
Street.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Lodi City Council does hereby
approve the purchase of the second of two murals by artist Tony Segale to be located at
the Buddhist Church Annex Building at 23 North Stockton Street.
