The following comminication was received between the

Commission (CPUC) to authorize a temporary rate increase
of $9.25 million to recover the cost of undergroundin9
telephone facilities in areas destroyed by the recent
Oakland Hills fire. The cities of Oakland and Berkeley
want the facilities installed underground, rather than on
utility poles above ground.

facilities in areas destroyed by the recent Oakland Hillis -'_ire: e

If our application is approved, we would install underground
facilities. end recover associated costs over a 12 -month period.
This request deviates from cost allocation rules for undergrounding
as set Earth in Rule 32 of Pacific Bell's teriffs. (Schedule Cal.
P.U.C. No. A.2.1.32)
The proposed increase applies to all Pacific Bell customers
statewide, including those receiving basic_ and toll services, as
well as long distance companies which are provided access to our
network. You now receive a "Rate Surcnarge" which would be
decreased by 0.144 percent if the application is approved. The
"Rate Surcharge' is listed on your bill in the "Regulated Monthly
Charges and Credits" section.
How your bill would be affected:
a Residence customevs with an average monthly bill of $30 :4ould
pay approximately five cents more per month for one year.
