AGENDA TITLE: Presentation: Youth Energy Summit (EUD)
MEETING DATE: January 21,2009
PREPARED B Y Electric Utility Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: None required.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Lodi Electric Utility, in partnership with the California Energy
Commission, Leg iSchool-SacramentoState University, Roseville
Electric Utility, and Sacramento Municipal Utility District, is
sponsoring the first-ever Youth Energy Summit or Y.E.S.
The Y.E.S. has essentially four main components:
1) Invite high school juniors and seniors from Lodi, Roseville and Sacramento to write an essay titled
How Big Is My Carbon Footprint? The students will submit the essays to LegiSchool in Sacramento
for review and approval.
2) The students are notified of their "acceptance" to participate in the Y.E.S. two-day training event to
be held in Sacramento on January 23-24. At the upcoming training workshop, the participating
students will learn in greater detail about renewable energy, water recycling, sustainable living
practices, green building practices, energy conservation, altemative-fueled vehicles, new and
emerging energy technologies, careers in the energy industry, and more - all from experienced and
engaging experts in these various fields.
3) Upon conclusion of the two-day training workshop, the students will form teams from their local high
schools and generate an actual "community service learning project." This project must be
designed, implemented and documented for the final step (see #4 below) i n the Y.E.S. process.
4) On Earth Day 2009 (April 22), the various student teams will gather on the east steps of the State
Capitol in Sacramento to present their community service learning project to a panel of judges (the
judges will include California Energy Commission staff and possibly State Legislators). The judges
will then select the top five student teams and award college scholarships ranging from $200 to
$1000 (per each member of the team).
We believe this is the first ever such Summit held in California's Central Valley. Similar events have
been held in the Los Angeles area, as well as the San Francisco Bay area.
