AGENDA TITLE: Acceptance of donations from citizens, businesses and service clubs to be used for
various park amenities and improvements to Lodi Lake Park and other locations in
honor of Lodi's Centennial celebration
MEETIND DATE: October 4, 2006
PREPAWED BY: Parks and Recreation Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council accepts donations from citizens, businesses
and service clubs to be used for various park amenities and
improvements to Lodi Lake Park and other locations in honor of
Lodi's Centennial celebration.
BACKGMO iD *4FOfiMATiDN: For the last several months, City staff has been working with MRs.
Carol Meehleis in her self -generated efforts to solicit a variety of
donations, goods and services, to be used towards the
enhancement of the City's local parks. It has been staff's commit-
ment to cooperatively encourage this kind of fundraising activity. And, the goal of staff is to ensure that
the donations are used in the manner for which the donor has intended and compatible with the
Department's current standards and policy.
Donations are anticipated to be used for park facility and amenity replacements such as picnic tables,
park benches, arbors and buildings, to name just a few. New fixtures that are consistent with park
development plans and standards, and that are compatible with the theme of the existing environment,
may also be introduced. Upgrading and enhancement of certain park areas may also be addressed. As
an example, a local church group has been recruited to donate volunteer maintenance hours for the
improvement of park gardens.
A donor recognition program is also being developed that will memorialize those individuals, businesses
and service clubs that have so generously given of themselves by contributing to this Centennial effort -
vividly described by Mrs. Meehleis in her "Can you share this dream?" letter (copy attached).
It is important to note that this program should not be confused with the City's existing Bench/Tree
Memorial Policy; but is a stand alone fundraising effort for the benefit for the City's Parks and Recreation
Department. It is also understood that there will be no obligation on the part of the City to replace
donated equipment or materials after their initial installation and once they have exhausted their
longevity.
FISCAL WPACT: City staff will help facilitate the location and installation of the donated items and
will assist in all maintenance and labor related enhancement work.
