AGENOOk T{TLE: Police Silver Star Award
MEETING DATE: March 7, 2007
PREPANEt3 BY: Jerry J. Adams, Chief of Police
RECOMMOMED ACTION: Chief Jerry Adams will present one Silver Star award to Officer
Ernie Nies.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Silver Star is the department's second highest award. It is
warded to individuals who demonstrate outstanding bravery above
and beyond what is expected in the normal course of duty.
On May 15, 2005, Offer Niels was conducting a hit and run investigation when a woman ran out of a
nearby house screaming there was man in the house with a knife. Officer Nies ran up and heard people
fighting in the kitchen. Fearing someone was being assaulted, He entered the house alone and saw a
man and woman struggling over a large pair of scissors. The woman was trying to stop the suicidal male
from stabbing himself. Since the woman was standing so close to the man, Officer Nies chose not to use
his service weapon. The male swung the scissors and hit her in the hand. Officer Nies pushed the
woman out of the way in an attempt to protect her. The man started walking towards Officer Nies. Officer
Nies grabbed the man's hand in which he was holding the scissors. They struggled over the scissors until
another officer arrived. They eventually subdued the man and took him into custody. Officer Nies
sustained a small cut on his hand as a result of his altercation with the man; he did not hesitate to place
himself in harm's way to protect the woman. He fought the suicidal male alone until backup officers
arrived. His brave actions that night brought the incident to a safe and successful conclusion.
The Awards Committee is made up of five officers and four civilians. Individuals are nominated by their
peers, supervisors, civilian employees, and the public. Sworn officers, civilian employees and volunteers
are eligible for the awards. The awards committee conducts investigation into each nomination. These
investigations may include interviews with the nominees, their co-workers, their supervisors, the public,
and anyone else who might provide information regarding the nomination. The awards committee votes
by secret ballot and the results are forwarded to an executive committee (two individuals who are not
associated with the committee) for final review.
Please note all other police awards were presented at a departmental luncheon held February 21, 2007.
